Sunyatta Amen, owner of Calabash Tea & Tonic, was working behind the counter of her café on a busy April afternoon when a customer asked if she heard about the recent arrests of two black men at a Philadelphia Starbucks. Amen had — the video of their arrests went viral and led to national uproar over how people of color are treated while out in public. Her customer swiftly thanked her for having a café with a warm, friendly atmosphere.

“We ask people when they come to the register, ‘How can we heal you today?’ Amen says. “It takes a lot of people aback, they’re like, ‘Nobody’s ever asked me that! I don’t know what you mean!’”
