Subject Line: OPPOSE SB982 Casino Gaming in Fairfax County

Dear Delegate:

SB982 expands the eligible VA host localities for casino gaming to include Fairfax County.  It would authorize a casino along one of the four Metro Line Corridors in Fairfax County, and most likely in Tysons along the Silver Line Corridor. We urge you to decline passing any such legislation.

The introduction of this bill lacked sponsorship from the General Assembly members who directly represent this area. The local government and community did not ask for this bill, nor did they provide input.

Establishing a casino in Tysons or along the Silver Metro line would put a burden on current roads and infrastructure, increase traffic congestion, increase crime, threaten economic stability, impact small business, alter the area’s social ties, and have a negative impact on vulnerable & surrounding communities.

I am opposed to introducing casino gaming along the Metro Silverline and concur with our local elected and community leaders representing this area.

Hunter Mill District Supervisor Walter Alcorn who represents part of Tysons opposes putting a casino along the Metro Silverline stating in FFX Now (01.13.25) – “Tysons is Fairfax County’s economic engine and since 2010 has had a long-term, ambitious, community-consensus development plan that a casino would upend and derail. Once a casino opens in a Silver Line station area, it becomes a no-go zone for major employers.”

In the Dranesville Dispatch (01.09.25), Supervisor Jimmy Bierman who represents McLean and the nearby Herndon area states “… I oppose this bill.  As has been pointed out ad nauseum, in contrast to every other instance in which a casino has been proposed under state legislation, the locality here has never asked for this authority. Placing a casino (with all the negative attendant consequences) on highly sought after land on the Silver Line runs directly contrary to the Tysons Plan which has been the source of significant economic, housing, and job growth opportunities for the County, all of which could be imperiled by the creation of “The Tysons Strip.”

The Vienna Town CouncilMcLean Citizens Association, McLean Islamic Center, Greater Tyson’s Citizens Association, The Rotunda and other civic and political organizations including the Fairfax GOP oppose the establishment of a gaming casino in Tyson’s.

Please OPPOSE SB982.

Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,

Stop Trump’s Unconstitutional Power Grab

Late Tuesday night, the White House’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) issued a memo ordering a freeze on “all federal financial assistance.”  This isn’t a just policy memo—it’s a revolution, and we can’t let it be a quiet one. Trump is dismantling the Constitution, claiming the power to decide which laws to enforce, and throwing millions of lives into chaos.

Senate Democrats must fight like hell: shut down the Senate, refuse to negotiate, and make this fight unavoidable. Your call will remind them that the stakes are nothing less than our democracy—and the lives of millions of Americans.

There are several ways that they can grind the business in the Senate to a halt, including:

  • Committing to oppose all of Trump’s nominees unless OMB reverses their guidance and releases the funds
  • Denying any GOP requests for Unanimous Consent that would speed up floor proceedings
  • Opposing all cloture votes to further stall floor proceedings
  • Requesting a Quorum Call at every possible opportunity to force Senators to physically be on the floor for business to proceed

Fill out this form right now and we’ll connect you with your Senator. Demand that they use every tool they have to fight back against Trump’s power grab. Ask them directly, “Will you commit to shutting down Senate business and refusing cooperation until this illegal freeze is lifted?”

Call your democratic senators to demand they shut it down stop Trump’s unconstitutional power

From Indivisible.org:
“Trump has signed a number of illegal orders during his first week in office. But his decision to issue a broad freeze on federal spending allocated by Congress is among the most radical, brazenly unconstitutional, and harmful acts by a president of the United States in modern history.

It’s not alarmist to say that if this is allowed to stand — if the president can usurp the powers of Congress and unilaterally withhold government services to suit his own political agenda — we’ll be entering the realm of dictatorship.

And it’s not just our democracy under threat in this moment. The chaos Trump has unleashed with this freeze has already touched millions of Americans as agencies, nonprofits, and people who rely on government grants for education, housing, and food assistance try to figure out what the hell is going on.”

Call your US Senator to sound the alarm and grind Senate activity to a halt until this freeze is lifted. ==> HERE

ACLU Statement on the Laken Riley Act:

Indivisible’s Ezra Levin: “Democrats who voted to open debate on the bill claimed they were just interested in having good faith negotiations on the bill and improving it. What actually happened is Republicans rejected all Democratic amendments, and in fact, included Republican amendments that made the bill even worse. 10 Democrats voted for it anyway. Now the bill will get a final vote in the Senate and then head back to the House, where Republicans simply need a majority to send Trump a legislative “win” in his first week.”

Dear Senator,

Please OPPOSE SB1274.

SB1274 protects police from accountability and undermines the criminal justice reform legislation put in place in 2020.

The VA NAACP has issued a statement calling on legislators to oppose SB1274 and “prioritize reforms that enhance transparency, accountability and trust within our criminal justice system. We must ensure that all officers are held to the highest standards of conduct to protect our communities and uphold justice for all.”
