Defend Democracy!

Democracy is our American way of life – it is the promise of human rights and freedoms.  It stands for justice, equality and fairness. It is the source of our mutual protections and security, our highest ideals and trust in the future.  It is a promise that all Citizens may participate and elect their leaders openly with all the safeguards required to ensure the integrity of the outcome.  It is a promise that all people’s votes will count equally.

It is not perfectly practiced or administered by Governments.   Laws and legal decisions may skew the balance of democracy (Citizens United).  The meddling of foreign enemies may result in electing leaders unfit for office (2016).  The suppression of votes through ID bills and Gerrymandering along with other tricks impact election outcomes.

Society is slow to change– examples abound when the ills of society threaten to break the ideals of democracy; but the Constitution allows continuous corrections (Dred Scott decision) and perfections (13^th and 14^th Amendment); it allows social experiments like prohibition (18^th amendment) and the repeal when the experiment fails.

The struggle to preserve democracy goes to the core of American ideals.  The imperative to protect our American system is more stringently required today than before 2016.  We are fighting against Foreign autocrat’s interference while simultaneously opposing the authoritarian appetites of the current administration and GOP led government.

For all of the above reasons, Herndon Reston Indivisible strongly supports H.R.1 as the first bill put forth to correct our current course and to once again put our collective backbones into the preservation of democracy.

Why is H.R. 1 Such an Important Legislative Vehicle?

By choosing to prioritize strengthening our democracy as H.R. 1, the Democrats are signaling that they are ready to fight the big fights and root out the unhealthy parts of our democracy that allowed Donald Trump to be elected in the first place.  This is exactly the right choice, and we ask that our Representatives follow through with this plan by passing H.R. 1 and t without watering it down or breaking it up.  We ask our Senators to co-sponsor the Senate Version.  This bill is the blue-print for preserving our Democracy!

Bottom Line

As a group we will work with you in all ways required to help your efforts to move this bill forward.  We will help educate on its importance, advocate for its passage, and lobby as appropriate.  We see this bill to be the core campaign issue of 2020 and whether its passed or not, will be used to identify those who stand with the American Dream of Freedom and Equality with Justice for all, and those who don’t.
