Subject Line: OPPOSE SB675Casino Gaming in Fairfax County

Please OPPOSE SB675 Casino gaming; host localities (Fairfax County)

SB675 expands the eligible VA host localities for casino gaming to include Fairfax County. The criteria defined for placement of a casino along the Metro Silverline potentially affects the following three Metro stations: Spring Hill, Greensboro, and Tyson’s Corner.

Establishing a casino in Tysons or along the Silver Metro line would put a burden on current roads and infrastructure, increase traffic congestion, increase crime, threaten economic stability, impact small business, alter the area’s social ties, and have a negative impact on vulnerable & surrounding communities.

The Tysons Comprehensive Plan calls for a people-focused urban setting, not one where casino gaming is in close proximity to schools. The large number of schools, both public and private, within a short distance to the potential casino gaming sites is alarming.

The introduction of this bill lacked transparency and sponsorship from the General Assembly members who represent this area. The local government and community did not ask for this bill nor did they provide input

I am opposed to introducing casino gaming along the Metro Silverline and concur with our local elected and community leaders.

Hunter Mill District Supervisor Walter Alcorn opposes putting a casino along the Metro Silverline stating in the Reston Patch (09.25.23) – “The land around these stations is already valuable for so many other socially beneficial uses, and plopping a casino into these emerging transit-oriented development communities during their formative years is a bad idea.”

In the Dranesville Dispatch (01.25.24), Supervisor Jimmy Bierman states “…a referendum bill in Richmond seeks to clear the way for a casino in Tysons along the Silver Line just a stone’s throw from the edge of the Dranesville District. Like I told many of you while I was campaigning, I do not believe that a casino along the Silver Line is a good idea, nor did I or any of my colleagues on the Board of Supervisors ask for the authority granted in this bill to put forth a casino referendum.”

The Vienna Town Council, McLean Citizens Association, Greater Tysons Citizens Association and other civic and political organizations, including Herndon-Reston Indivisible, oppose the establishment of a gaming casino in Tysons.

Please OPPOSE SB675.

Thank you for your consideration.

Dear Senator,

Please OPPOSE SB675 expanding casino gaming into Fairfax County

SB675 expands the eligible host localities for casino gaming in VA to Fairfax County. The current criteria defined for placement of a casino along the Metro Silverline potentially affects the following three Metro stations: Spring Hill, Greensboro, and Tyson’s Corner.

According to FFXNow.org, “Fairfax County casino push targets abandoned Tysons auto dealership”, casino placement would be close to the Spring Hill metro station which is at the corner of Rt 7 and Tyco Rd.

Senator Dave Marsden, the Patron of SB675, does not represent the constituents who would be impacted by placement of a casino in their community. The introduction of this bill lacked transparency and community input on development issues.

Establishing a casino in Tysons or along the Silver Metro line would put a burden on current roads and infrastructure, increase traffic congestion, increase crime, threaten economic stability, impact small business, alter the area’s social ties, and have a negative impact on vulnerable & surrounding communities.
