(WAMU radio) — “Photo caption: Maame Biney, Reston, Virginia. Sport: Women’s short track speedskating.” — Five athletes from the Washington, D.C. region are part of Team USA’s red, white and blue ranks in Pyeongchang. The nation’s capital can’t compete in terms of numbers with traditional winter sports hubs like Colorado (31 Olympic athletes this year), California (22), or Minnesota (19), but the D.C. suburbs have produced a diverse lineup of athletes for locals to root for.
Two short track speedskaters who honed their skills in the area’s competitive speedskating clubs will be competing for the U.S. in Pyeongchang. They’ll be joined by two hockey players and a freestyle skier. In March, one other local athlete will represent the region in the Paralympic Games.
