Whitney Parnell Has the Perfect Message for Our Summer Initiative
Tuesday’s presentation is focused on activism at the personal level.
Whitney Parnell is CEO of Service Never Sleeps
“People that we know aren’t evil,” Whitney Parnell says, “They are just motivated by their experiences.”
Whitney eschews the common Us-Them scenario, where we talk past one another, to search for what we have in common that can incrementally migrate a person toward a more open conversation. A conversation that helps us understand the motivations of those with whom we disagree.
Whitney promotes a continuum of involving dialogue from caring – to learning – to advocacy – to direct action in defending marginalized groups, such as gays, Muslims, or Blacks. She talks about Allyship, where individuals of privilege learn how to speak up for groups who are not present to defend themselves.
Whitney will speak about
• her experience as an activist,
• her organization, Service Never Sleeps, and
• her workshops on Allyship, for those interested in working toward equality, opportunity and inclusion.
She will inspire you to engage with those around you in a positive way as we seek our shared humanity and our personal influence on social justice.
We’ll also hear from Damita Snow, from the Minority Rights issue group, as well as Paul Walsh, who chaired the multi-day Vigil for Truth protest as selected federal agencies.
