Virginia gubernatorial contender Ralph Northam had an edge of more than $500,000 over Democratic primary rival Tom Perriello heading into the last weeks before the June 13 contest, according to filings compiled Tuesday by the Virginia Public Access Project (VPAP).
Both campaigns reported raising around $2 million in April and May. But because of earlier fundraising efforts, Northam, the lieutenant governor, had $1.3 million available as of June 1 while Perriello had $734,000. The two men are running neck-and-neck, according to recent polls.
On the Republican side, former political operative Ed Gillespie announced that he had $2.4 million available heading into an election where he has maintained a comfortable lead over his two primary rivals in both voter support and cash.
