SUMMARY:HRI Gun Violence Prevention: NRA Vigil
DESCRIPTION:The monthly protest at the NRA returns on Sunday afternoon after a couple of months in limbo due to the coronavirus pandemic. Northern Virginia moves to Phase 2 of re-opening as of Friday\, June 12\, so gatherings of 50 will be permitted in this area. \nWith the pandemic still very much with us despite the re-opening\, many of us are not ready to venture out and risk our own health and that of other protesters. And we will not yet return to holding our HRI letters for the June protest. A great way to participate in the protest safely is to go to the site during the protest\, and drive back and forth past the NRA a few times honking your horns. The provides great support to the protesters (speaking as a protester that has always longed for this kind of support!) \nHope to see you Sunday\, whether you are proudly holding a sign\, masked and socially distanced from others\, or participating from the safety and comfort of your vehicle!

SUMMARY:Everytown #WearOrange Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Orange is the color that Hadiya Pendleton’s friends wore in her honor when she was shot and killed in Chicago at the age of 15 — just one week after performing at President Obama’s 2nd inaugural parade in 2013. After her death\, they asked us to stand up\, speak out\, and Wear Orange to raise awareness about gun violence. \nSince then orange has been the defining color of the gun violence prevention movement. New York gun violence prevention advocate Erica Ford spearheaded orange as the color of peace through her work with her organization\, Life Camp\, Inc. Whether it’s worn by students in Montana\, activists in New York\, or Hadiya’s loved ones in Chicago\, the color orange honors the more than 100 lives cut short and the hundreds more wounded by gun violence everyday. \nOur movement gains momentum when gun sense activists come together to fight for a future free from gun violence. Wear Orange Weekend is an opportunity for us to show the country just how powerful we are. National Gun Violence Awareness Day is the first Friday in June\, which will be June 5 in 2020. Together\, with hundreds of thousands of Americans\, we turned America orange. But the work doesn’t end there. Everytown and our partner organizations continue to do life-saving work so that we can get closer to realizing a future free from gun violence. we wear orange to be seen\, and demand that we be heard. Support us by going orange.

SUMMARY:Car Rally for Justice for Black Lives
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Fairfax County NAACP. \nCome out and show your support at a peaceful and pandemic compliant Car Rally on Wednesday June 3 at the Fairfax County Government Center. Community leaders will address the crowd\, and we will also broadcast the speeches on Facebook Live. \nThere will be police directing traffic to the parking lots we have reserved around the Government Center. \nOnce parked and safe to do so\, you may get out and stand near your vehicle. Children must be supervised at all times. Please Observe social distancing and masking requirements! \n****** \n\nA message from our President\, Sean Perryman: \nAs promised\, Fairfax County NAACP is hosting a car rally for George Floyd\, for all the lives wrongly taken\, and for justice. It will be at Fairfax Government Center in Lot C. Join us Wednesday\, June 3 at 6:30 pm. We anticipate going until around 8 and you don’t have to stay the entire time. \nWe’re calling on you to come out in support. We need to show everyone in Fairfax\, Virginia\, and across the country\, that our community cares about Black Lives and cares about justice. This display of power and support will be crucial as we discuss policy reform. We need to show that the people want change. \nA couple of things: \n– we have a permit for this gathering so we are not expecting interference and the police have offered to direct traffic\n-we understand not everyone can protest in the same way. We want to offer people safe alternatives to express themselves. This rally is in a parking lot. We ask that you stay with your car but if you must get out\, wear a mask and still stay by your car as to not impede traffic. We will be stationary but you should stay by your car in case we need you to move.\n– all are welcome. However\, if you come on foot\, wear a mask\, mind physical distancing\, and don’t interfere with traffic.\n-the event will start a little after 6:30. We will have a few remarks. We will have some audio equipment but also go to Fairfax NAACP Facebook page during the rally so you can stream the live and hear from your car\n-it’s first come first serve but we are working on overflow and you can also park in the Fairfax Government Center like normal so we should be able accommodate many people. \nThis brings me to my most important point: this struggle won’t be convenient. Our comms teams have been inundated with people asking two questions 1. Will I be guaranteed a reserved spot and 2. Are you doing this another time. \nWell\, as you can imagine\, we cannot verify people and take them to a special spot. We ask people to rsvp to gauge interest. But if you believe in this cause\, come out. Be there. The worse thing that could happen is that so many people in your community cared that there isn’t room for you in the entire Government Center and you made the drive. If that’s the greatest risk you take\, I believe this is worth it. We want you there though and we will try to accommodate as many people as possible. And inevitably people who say they will come won’t show\, so come on out. \nWill we do this again? We can never recreate this moment. This is everyone’s moment. This our moment to band together as our nation is burning and peacefully exercise our first amendment rights at the very moment people seek to quash those rights. We can have another rally but this is the moment. Come to this one. \nI cannot guarantee you a space\, I cannot guarantee that there won’t be a little traffic\, I cannot guarantee you that you may not be inconvenienced in some way. \nI can only guarantee you that I will be there with our incredible team of volunteers from the NAACP and that we are attempting in the safest way possible to rally for Black Lives. \nI hope to see you there.
